What Interior Paint Covers the Best

Choosing the right interior paint can be a daunting task. With numerous brands and claims flooding the market, it’s crucial to find a paint that truly delivers in terms of coverage.

In this blog post, we will uncover the interior paint that covers the best. Join us as we explore popular paint brands, their unique features, and the factors that influence their coverage capabilities.

Exploring Paint Brands

To assess the covering power of interior paints, we selected renowned manufacturers known for their quality products and customer satisfaction. The chosen brands are

  1. PPG Manor Hall,
  2. Benjamin Moore Aura,
  3. Behr Marquee, and
  4. Sherwin Williams Emerald.

While some of these paints are available at big box stores like Home Depot, others can only be obtained from specific distributors or independently owned paint and hardware stores. It’s important to research availability before making your purchase.

What Interior Paint Covers the Best?

When it comes to finding the interior paint that covers the best, there are several factors to consider. The effectiveness of paint coverage can vary depending on the brand, surface texture, application method, and color selection. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, certain paints have gained recognition for their superior covering power.

Behr Marquee

Behr Marquee is well-known for its one-coat coverage guarantee. They offer a limited palette of colors specifically formulated to cover in just one coat. While it may not cover extreme color changes in one coat, it generally provides satisfactory coverage and is available at major retailers like Home Depot.

Benjamin Moore Aura

Benjamin Moore Aura is recognized for its superior durability and coverage. It offers a wide range of colors and is known for its ability to cover surfaces effectively, even in challenging conditions. It is available exclusively at independently owned paint and hardware stores.

PPG Manor Hall

PPG Manor Hall is a popular choice among professionals. It offers good coverage and durability, and its paint can only be purchased at PPG stores. It is known for its quality and reliability.

Sherwin Williams Emerald

Sherwin Williams Emerald is a high-quality paint known for its smooth finish and excellent coverage. While it may not have the same level of coverage as some other brands, it is still a reliable choice, especially when paired with proper surface preparation and application techniques.

Coverage Considerations

Determining the best interior paint coverage involves various factors, including the substrate, application method, and color selection. Smooth surfaces may yield different coverage results compared to rough textured surfaces.

Additionally, the choice between a thicker nap roller or a brush can also impact coverage. Moreover, certain colors tend to cover more easily than others.

Behr Marquee: The One-Coat Wonder?

Behr Marquee has made a bold claim that its line of paints covers in just one coat. Intrigued by this assertion, we put it to the test. After evaluating the Behr Marquee one-coat guaranteed colors, we found that the claim holds true, but with certain considerations.

Firstly, for the one-coat guarantee, you must choose from Behr’s limited palette of 1000 colors marked with a “1” in the upper right-hand corner on their website. While Behr Marquee excelled at providing full coverage in one coat for non-drastic color changes, such as painting over a standard, non-black surface, more extreme color transformations may require a second coat.

Comparing the Results

In our experiment, we applied the selected paints using a 3/8″ nap roller on knockdown texture drywall surfaces. After one coat, Benjamin Moore Aura exhibited the best coverage, followed by Behr Marquee, PPG Manor Hall, and Sherwin Williams Emerald, which had the least coverage.

However, after two coats, all paints achieved full coverage, with Benjamin Moore Aura, Behr Marquee, and PPG Manor Hall performing similarly. Notably, the slight color variation among paints may have influenced perceived coverage, with Sherwin Williams and Behr Marquee being the purest white in our testing.

Practical Considerations

For most DIY homeowners, applying two coats of paint is generally recommended. However, if you’re hiring a professional painter, opting for a one-coat color can potentially yield cost savings due to reduced labor. It’s worth discussing this option with your painter to see if it aligns with your job.
